Details of The Retreat
The Retreat in Wirksworth sleeps 2 people. A charming 19th century converted chapel for two people situated right in the centre of Wirksworth. The Retreat is a light and welcoming room with a wonderful airy space and cast-iron, renaissance-style glass windows looking out across the cemetery to farmhouses which dot the slopes of the hillside beyond. You enter through a beautiful, slate grey arched door, where there is a double bed within a cosy living area with kitchen, dining and sitting area and under-floor heating for your convenience. The shower room is separate with washbasin, water closet and homely details such as a wooden, gothic church mirror. This detached property is in the middle of a Baptist cemetery, which is rarely visited, set back from the road, making this a very quiet and atmospheric place for a relaxing break. There is outdoor seating at the rear of the building within the graveyard itself, with stunning views of the distant landscape, a very peaceful and tranquil spot to sit and reflect. Formally desolate, the Retreat has been saved from ruin and refurbished as an atmospheric holiday let. It is a 200-year-old, Grade II listed building with lots of well thought out, quaint details within, ideal for a couple to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While there are lots of obvious Peak District attractions within an hour's drive of Wirksworth, walkers will be more than happy with the scenery and trails on offer right on the doorstep. The 18-mile
High Peak trail passes right by the town and there is a heritage steam railway a few minutes' walk away, this cottage is ideal for those looking to explore and indulge in ancient medieval history, Wirksworth's unspoilt town has to offer.
