St. Johns Cottage near Alston is set in a garden bordered by mature trees; this magical residence is tucked away in the charming village of Garrigill, at the foot of Alston Moor. Cited as the highest market town in England, Alston, 2 miles, is the quintessential traditional town in the Peak District, with cobbled streets, welcoming public houses, butchers, bakers and even its own candlemaker. Its old-world charm is what saw Alston feature as the backdrop for ITV productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist.

Surrounded by attractions, landmarks and other points of interest, there’s something for everyone in the area. The glorious coast and countryside of Northumbria is within easy travelling distance, as is the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the border of Scotland. History buffs are sure to get a kick out of the historical Roman fort nearby, along with the museums, exhibitions and sites along Hadrian’s Wall. If you’re willing to go further afield, the Beamish Museum offers a unique chance to see what life was like for people living in the North of England some 200 years ago.

For city lovers, there’s Newcastle and Carlisle within driving distance, and the Metro Centre in Gateshead is a paradise for keen shoppers.
