Details of Cutlass Cottage
Cutlass Cottage in Brixham, Devon sleeps 5 people. Cutlass Cottage in Brixham has amazing views over Torbay from the back of the property, and benefits from an enclosed garden with sea views from the dining room, kitchen and double bedroom. This semi-detached cottage has been decorated and furnished to a good standard and is an ideal location for a family holiday, or group of friends getting together.
Brixham has been a charming and picturesque working fishing port for centuries, with pretty fishermen’s cottages clustered around the historic harbour where Prince William of Orange landed in 1688. The town has many attractive, winding, narrow streets with colourful cottages, a wide selection of shops, art gallery, craft shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs and churches. Brixham’s beaches are a mixture of sand, shingle and large pebbles, and the popular open air sea water swimming pool is surrounded by a shingle and rock beach, which is always popular for rock pooling. Nearby are the wonderful sandy beaches of Broadsands, Goodrington and
Paignton, all of which provide good bathing opportunities.
There are lovely coastal footpaths to Berry Head Nature Reserve, with its colonies of nesting guillemots and kittiwakes, the Napoleonic fort and the lighthouse. The lighthouse is both the smallest and highest in Britain! You can take a boat trip over to
Torquay and visit the theatre, or take a trip into Living Coasts and visit the penguins who wander freely. Brixham forms the third part of ’Torbay’ - the other parts being Torquay and
Paignton. The bay is known as the ’English Riviera’ because of its unique micro-climate, and Brixham shares this mild climate.
South Devon’s two cities are Exeter and Plymouth - both are within easy driving distance and offer their own tourist attractions, historical buildings, and shops. Dartmoor is breathtakingly beautiful - at once romantic, mysterious, wild and eerie. You can visit the tourist spots or, if you are an experienced walker and navigator, you can get away from the tourists and explore the depths of Dartmoor. You will see wild Dartmoor ponies, cross ancient stone bridges spanning the clear bubbling waters of the River Dart and other rivers, and feel the somewhat eerie presence of the ’Tors’ - rocky hills which preside majestically over the moors.
Dartmouth is the neighbouring town to Brixham, situated on and across the mouth of the River Dart. Take the ferry (car and foot passengers) across to
Dartmouth. Whilst waiting for the ferry, look across to Dartmouth at the Britannia Royal Naval College; located on a hill above the river, it glints in the sunshine, a splendid backdrop for the river estuary with its many sailing boats, naval boats and pleasure cruisers. Look to the mouth of the river and you will see two castles - those of Kingswear and Dartmouth, true fairy-like castles guarding the mouth, with the rocky waters of the estuary lapping at their feet.
Don’t forget to visit Agatha Christie’s home, Greenway, which for many years was her summer residence, now open to the public; as well as many National Trust properties all waiting to be explored. The beach is 200 yards. With the shop ¾ mile, and the bar & restaurant ¼ mile from Cutlass Cottage in Brixham.
