Poole. The cottage is one of 111 originally built as estate workers’ cottages for the Canford Estate, which is now Canford School, and they are known locally as Lady Wimborne Cottages. Their construction is attributed to the philanthropic work of Lady Charlotte Guest, wife of Sir John Guest who was the owner of a vast Welsh iron and steel works, followed by the work of their daughter-in-law Cornelia, Lady Wimborne, from whom the cottages took their name. The cottages were built between 1867 and 1904 and each has a number over the front door indicating the order they were built.
This light and airy, tastefully styled cottage has original features such as lattice windows, a wooden porch, large ornamental door hinges and an ornamental fire surround in the bedroom. The open plan living/dining room leads to a sunny conservatory, which opens to an enclosed courtyard. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, the master benefiting from a walk-in wardrobe, and a separate bathroom.
There is a bus stop close by for trips to the charming market town of Wimborne, or to Poole with its award-winning sandy beach. There is so much to do in the area, with Bournemouth, Poole,
Salisbury and Dorchester all within easy driving distance, as are The New Forest and Christchurch Harbour. Attractions to visit include Brownsea Island,
Beaulieu Motor Museum, The Purbecks with the National Trust Corfe Castle and the seaside town of
Swanage. Famous as ’Hardy Country’ many of Dorset’s towns and landmarks are recognisable from the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born in Dorchester. The county is renowned for its miles of beautiful beaches as well as Jurassic Coastline for stunning views and walks, a World Heritage Site. For the outdoor enthusiast, there is walking and wildlife centres such as Avon Heath and Moors Valley with cycle hire, fishing, Segway and orienteering. Water sports are available nearby.
