Oakham is the county town of England’s smallest and arguably prettiest counties, Rutland. It is a traditional market town with markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, where you can find displays of the finest local produce from meats and pies, to local cheeses, artisan bread and fresh free-range eggs. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, a traditional farmers market takes place in Oakham, a host of quality produce direct from local farmers. The town is packed with heritage and visits to the recently restored Oakham Castle and Rutland County Museum. There is also Oakham signal box, which became famous as the template for Airfix and Dapol for their model railway signal boxes and is one of a few signal boxes on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest, which is in daily use to this day.
If that’s not enough, Oakham boasts an abundant mix of cafés, bars, restaurants and pubs to suit every budget and a choice of stylish shops and boutiques. Rutland Water can be discovered just 6 miles away where you will find many activities including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, boat trips, crazy golf, 18-hole golf and fishing, or even just walking. It is a haven for birdwatchers and lovers of wildlife, with the Rutland Osprey Project at Lyndon Nature Reserve and Rutland Water Nature Reserve at Egleton close by. Also close by are other market towns of
Uppingham,
