Truro in Cornwall was once an important river port, and very important in the Cornish tin mining industry. Today Truro still has plenty of character, with picturesque streets lined with Georgian and Victorian architecture. Princes Street is the place to see the elegant town houses of the old merchants, and Lemmon Street is one of the nest preserved Georgian streets in England.
Truro was a popular destination for the local gentry back in the 18th century; when they attended balls held in the Assembly Rooms, and enjoyed the local theatre. Italianate City Hall, the 1930's faade of the Plaza Cinema, the Royal Cornwall Museum, and the Gothic Revival Cathedral are all architectural joys to visit.
Known for being the shopping capital of Cornwall, Truro is the place to come for browsing along the cobbled streets and narrow passageways. Lemmon Quay contains a big indoor market, and there are regular farmers markets, where you can pick up some fresh Cornish produce.
A holiday cottage break in Truro is an ideal place to explore the Cornish countryside as it has an excellent road network, and is within easy reach of both the North and South coast.
