Details of The Cottage
The Cottage in Skallary, Isle of Barra, Outter Hebrides sleeps 4 people in 2 bedrooms. The Cottage in Skallary is on the Isle of Barra; an absolute gem of a place. At only 11 miles by 6 miles, the island is small, but it’s the best of the Highlands and Islands all packed in together. There’s just so much to see in such a relatively small place. The many coastal settlements that occupy the south and sheltered east coastline of Barra including iconic Castlebay
, luckily complete with castle, the west with stunning white beaches and classic Hebridean machair sand dunes, the north with the world-famous Barra airport where planes land on the beach only at low tide! It is continually voted the world’s most scenic landing location using a scheduled flight, and last but not least the interior of the island with rolling high hills of heather waiting to be explored on foot using the Hebridean Way walking trail.
The Cottage is a detached thoughtfully and beautifully renovated property just outside the wee community of Earsary on the eastern, rocky and more sheltered side of Barra.
From the enclosed garden you can walk in any direction to explore; behind the house to get to the interior for fine views along the Outer Hebrides and also across the sea to Skye and the mainland. Also, just across the road, a couple of minutes’ walk away, the shoreline can be reached.
Before entering this lovely little cottage you cross the deck which is positioned to shelter those sitting out on it from the commonly strong winds, it faces south so can be a beautiful sun spot.
Inside the cottage you immediately fall for the place because it has been finished so wonderfully, you can tell that the owner is an artist. There is a spacious bathroom with shower cubicle, a stylish kitchen with breakfast area and a living room. This large room which has triple aspect and the interior design is clever and attractive. The wood burner is a wonderful feature anyway but the owner has created an exquisite hearth out of an art piece. The living room has a dining area and there is a spacious double bedroom to the rear of the house. On the first floor is a landing with a small desk if visitors want to sit with their laptop and continue writing that novel they’ve always wanted to finish. There is another double bedroom and also a stunning bathroom with free-standing bath.
Barra is special. You may think you can see it in a couple of days, but really you need more time to enjoy it. It is honestly spectacular at every turn and at different times of the day. The Cottage is your perfect bolthole for exploring this Hebridean gem. The beach is 200 yards from The Cottage in Skallary. With the shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles from The Cottage.
